Why Canada eCoin?

Canada eCoin History
The Canada eCoin project was originally funded by a group in Edmonton in March of 2014. It is a scrypt-auxpow based coin with 30 second block times and a mostly Canadian community. A year after the launch, funding was pulled and the original creators moved on to other projects. The Canada eCoin project became a community project after a community takeover happened in 2015.

The Canada eCoin project was one of the first to introduce Auxiliary Proof of Work (AUXPOW); a method of mining that allows for the sharing of hash power with other AUXPOW enabled coins. Not only does this allow for extremely eco-friendly hashing, but it opened the door to innovation by way of side-chains and cooperative mining. This ability is what attracted me to join the community as I feel this level of resource sharing is needed to sustain (hundreds, or thousands of) blockchains in the future.

The Canada eCoin Community Foundation / Fondation de la communauté du Canada eCoin
As we move forward into the future, we are excited to establish a non-profit organisation to be the overseer of the Canada eCoin Project. The Canada eCoin Community Foundation will be responsible for maintaining consensus within the community and create structure which will allow us to morph our community into a business entity and operate as an incubator to put forth our resources into sponsoring other Canadian related projects that are in alignment with our vision as a community.

A Canadian based, non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting the Canada eCoin project, and coordinating the efforts of the community to define and achieve it’s vision.

Our Vision for our Future: That every Canadian has the right knowledge and tools to ensure their own ability, safety and privacy while operating within our technologically enriched nation.

My business, GigaGeek Industries (Hespeler) has been exploring distributed technologies since 2009 with the purpose of offering clients open source solutions to help them create private and secure (bulletproof) systems. We were excited to see blockchains become a reality. We have been sponsoring the Canada eCoin project by way of offering servers and bandwidth for the public facing sites/services since March of 2015 when we purchased the domain names that were not renewed by the original developers. Since then, we have been leading the growth of the community and helping the project expand it’s reach into Canadian use cases.

Much of our work as a business has been focused around specific business related use cases however we have dedicated a portion our time and efforts on public use cases ranging from designing merchant tools to exploring the abilities to spawn a liquid governance model using p2p networks of trust.

The Canada eCoin blockchain and side-chains
It has been a major goal of mine to establish side chains for the Canada eCoin project which will serve as purpose driven data-stores with the ability to consume Canada eCoins. This allows for a wide array of data to be stored in our blockchains but not require any one user to download/sync all of the blockchain data from every single use case. Each sidechain consumes Canada eCoins during their operation, depleting the supply of Canada eCoins in the process; making the Canada eCoin project one of the only cryptocurrency projects that promote the destruction of their available tokens.

Sidechains allow Canada eCoin tokens to travel back-and-forth to other blockchains (called “sidechains”). Thus, Canada eCoin owners can opt-in to new features or trade-offs. Canada eCoin Core nodes never need to know or care what any sidechain is doing, they are separate blockchains.

Merged mining innovation
As a scrypt-auxpow based blockchain, the Canada eCoin offers abilities to merge mine. This method of hashing is super eco-friendly as it allows a single miner to apply it’s resources to many blockchains (and/or sidechains) at one time. This is one of the major reasons why the Canada eCoin project is `better` than a lot of others.

What is next?!
As our community grows stronger, we find ourselves with an ever-growing need to keep everyone updated on the work and accomplishments. We have opened a new youtube channel with the intention of posting videos for our FAQ for cryptocurrency related topics. We hope to eventually be able to post videos weekly, but for now we will be sorting out the process and posting as frequently as possible. We have posted our very first video; the response to our reddit AMA. Head over to youtube and have yourself a listen -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p68LQmKKjik. Feel free to post more questions for our next AMA in the video comments.

An important note: What is constant is an ever growing need for cryptocurrency specialists and knowledge throughout Canada. As we come together to share our resources, knowledge and experience with one-another, we grow as a community.
